Review of the Beatnik Space Blade Paddle
Introduction
The Space Blade paddle, crafted by Beatnik Sports, a company based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents a significant innovation in the ever-evolving world of pickleball technology. Before diving into this review, I must admit that Beatnik Sports was unfamiliar to me until I encountered the Space Blade paddle.
Pickleball Technology Evolution
When I first started playing pickleball over a decade ago, it was a challenge to gather four players for a game—a far cry from today's popularity. This was the era transitioning from wooden to fiberglass paddles. Back then, paddle designs varied widely—I even owned one with a face resembling a snare drum, capable of driving the ball with incredible force.
However, my joy was short-lived when someone pointed out, “That’s not USAPA approved!”
I was unfamiliar with the USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) at the time. Despite the dubious "USAPA Approved" label on the paddle, I decided to switch to an early version of the Z5, which unfortunately didn't last long as its edge started peeling off.
Paddle Materials: Fiberglass vs. Carbon Fiber
There's a common misconception that carbon-faced, carbon fiber-faced, and aramid-faced paddles are more powerful than fiberglass ones. In reality, fiberglass, like other composites, is lightweight and often stronger than steel. Carbon fiber, being more rigid, sacrifices power for control, making it a preferred choice for precision play. For a deeper dive into the technical differences between fiberglass and carbon fiber, you can visit this link.
The Space Blade Paddle
Pickleball paddle technology is advancing rapidly, with new composites being introduced not only to paddle faces but also to their internal structures. The Space Blade paddle from Beatnik Sports is a prime example of this innovation.
In the following, I explore the features, performance, and unique attributes of the Space Blade paddle.
BEATNIK SPACE BLADE CONSTRUCTION
This paddle has a unique construction and takes advantage of the flexibility of fiberglass.
Note that the paddle has a carbon fiber face, but incorporates fiberglass, as well as Kevlar, into the core. This construction provides the control aspects of carbon fiber, while adding power through the use of fiberglass and Kevlar.
The company states the (patent pending) grip, the most unique I have ever seen, reduces vibration. I don’t know how the “modules” in the grip reduce vibration, but I can attest to the fact that there is virtually no vibration on any shots, soft or hard.
BEATNIK SPACE BLADE CONSTRUCTION
Here are the technical specs:
• Face: Carbon Fiber
• Weight: ~ 8 ounces (my weighed 7.7 ounces)
• Grip Circumference: 4.25 inches
• Grip: Anti-vibration Pro Grip
• Handle Length: 5.51 inches (great for two-handed backhands)
• Paddle Length: 15.85 inches
• Paddle Width: 7.85 inches
• Core Material: Polypropylene honey comb
• Core Thickness: 16mm
• Edge Guard: Reinforced fiber glass tubular braid
PERFORMANCE
The Space Blade paddle delivers excellent performance across all aspects of the game. One standout feature worth highlighting is its ability to generate spin. I was able to apply heavy topspin and sidespin on my serves, and the spin was significant enough to affect the opponent's shots at the net. In other words, players at the net might find their shots deviating from their intended trajectory due to the spin imparted by the Space Blade.
Despite its lightweight design, the Space Blade enables powerful groundstrokes and serves. This power can be attributed to the unique internal construction of the paddle. However, unlike some paddles, such as the Gearbox, the Space Blade does not cause the ball to fly uncontrollably off the face. This means you can hit powerful groundstrokes without sacrificing control.
BOTTOM LINE
The Space Blade is a great paddle. If you want a paddle that combines control and power, this is an excellent choice. It retails for $219, but if you follow this link and use the code HANS10, you will receive a 10% discount: https://beatniksports.com/collections/advanced-players/products/space-blade
Note that the company sells other paddles for which the discount will work. One is called the “XMonster.” This is what they say about it: “Specifically designed for advanced players with a competitive tennis background, XMonster is the most powerful paddle in our roster.”
